Laos on its ways to WTO Membership Challenges and opportunities for developing high-value agricultural exports (Economic Background Paper Vol. II)
By Jürgen Wiemann, Verena Ashoff, Melanie Grad, Anna Katharina Meyer, Stefanie Ruff, Thomas Staiger
Laos is preparing for World Trade Organization accession. It is an important step on its way to an open market economy, integrated in the regional and global economy.
There are possible strategies for an agriculture-based least developed country like Laos to benefit from trade integration. As a small landlocked country with weak infrastructure, Laos faces high transport costs and has difficulties in making inroads into regional and global markets for standard food and agricultural commodities using mass production. On the demand side, consumers on both developed and developing countries are increasingly asking for safe, quality products and specialty food. The study focuses on challenges and opportunities for developing high-value agricultural exports which would be a promising strategy for Laos to benefit from trade integration
